Hello everyone, it’s so good to be back! What a year it’s been. The girls have been keeping us busy. Toddlers between the ages of 1 and 3; if you’ve been there you know it is hectic. These little busy bodies just don’t stop! Life is certainly never boring and at the same time unpredictable. Part of that unpredictability I shared with a mom in my consult room today whose baby had a diagnosis of hip dysplasia. Something that is very close to my heart. I was devastated when I got a call from my GP less than an hour after Miss M’s hip ultrasound. 24hrs later at the gentle age of 4months we were sitting in an orthopaedic surgeon’s waiting room. A place I had not envisioned for my daughter amidst all the aspirations and dreams we had for her. We became very familiar with that waiting room and unfortunately 2 years later her sister joined her at the gentle age of 5wks. Between the girls we had 2 different kinds of hip braces, regular orthotists appointments, ultrasounds, X-rays and a 2 year pass which disqualified us from parks, play centres, pools, almost any outdoor toddler activity and caused delays in language, social interactions and physical milestones. We found ourselves sitting in paediatricians rooms, seeing physios and speech pathologists. It was endless. I cried, felt helpless and wished for better times. This photo was taken two days ago. They are still on yearly checkups until the girls are in school so the constant fear of regression needing surgery is always there. But they’ve come a long way. I’m not the survivor here, the girls are. Together we rose, healed and overcame. I have sat at the end of the bed…I know on some level the angst a parent may have when their child is unwell. To the mom who sat in my room today let’s take this journey together.
